Weekend food bags, school snack closets and community partnerships, so children have food when school meals aren’t there.

Weekend Food Bags

Fighting childhood hunger, one weekend at a time.

For many children, school breakfast and lunch are their most reliable meals. But weekends can be different. Community Food 2 Kids helps bridge that gap with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food that children take home each Friday.

Each week, schools confidentially identify students who would benefit. Our volunteers deliver food bags to the schools, and staff discreetly place them in backpacks before the weekend. Families never apply directly through us, so every child’s privacy is protected.

What’s in a bag

Easy, kid-friendly food.

Each bag contains easy-to-prepare, kid-friendly foods such as oatmeal, cereal, mac and cheese, pasta, soup, granola bars, fruit cups, and healthy snacks, to help bridge the gap over weekends when school meals aren’t available.

It costs about $8 a week to fill one child’s weekend food bag, and about $320 covers a child for a whole school year.

School Snack Closets

Learning is hard when you’re hungry.

Snack closets are small pantries inside schools that teachers can open whenever a student needs something to eat during the school day. They give immediate support to children who come to school hungry or need a snack to stay focused and ready to learn.

We stock snack closets in every Seymour school and one Oxford elementary school, and provide food support for the Ansonia Boys & Girls Club.

Community Partnerships

As community needs grow, so do we.

Through strong partnerships with schools, volunteers, local businesses and supporters, we expand our reach and serve more children each year. Today that means weekend food bags for more than 70 children in 6 schools and programs.
